On the 25th of January in 1323, Duke Gediminas sent one of his famous letters to the biggest cities around Europe mentioning Vilnius for the first time ever. This way Vilnius, a city little known to western europeans, was immortalised in the eyes of all Europe. Now, every year on January 25th Vilnius celebrates its birthday by illuminating Gediminas Castle, and the Vilnius Light Festival begins. The light rays that will form the crown of Gediminas Castle will allow you to see when the festival starts, even from the most remote areas of the capital.
