Duke Gediminas was the founder of this city. Vilnius’ birthday is symbolically counted from the date  when Gediminas sent his famous letter on January 25th, 1323. Just like the previous years, one of the most photographed installations of the Festival of Lights, the sword of Gediminas, is illuminated once more. For some it’s a Duke coming from times past, for some it is reminiscent of a Star Wars warrior. In any case, Vilnius’ birthday would not be possible without a tribute to Duke Gediminas.
